Whether you’re a gloss girl or balm-obsessed, we can all agree on one thing: chapped lips are an unwanted companion in cold weather. Nobody – and I mean nobody – enjoys the feeling of chapped and peeling lips. Especially as the weather gets cooler and the lovely combination of dry indoor heat and cold wind takes its toll on our skin, there’s no better time to take action and add lip products that actually moisturize your lips into your routine.
To make your search for the hydrating lip balm of the season easier, we’ve rounded up our team’s favorite balms, masks, glosses, and oils that keep our lips flake-free no matter the season. These are the hydrating lip products our editors swear by to give you a healthy, plump lip look (and feel!) year-round. And yes, it is socially acceptable to wear a lip sleeping mask during the day.
Lip butter balm
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm is hands down the best moisturizing lip product on the market. What sets it apart for me is the wear. I can go several hours without reapplying and still feel like my lips are super hydrated and still slightly shiny and tinted. I personally prefer the vanilla beige shade because I love the shade, but the clear vanilla shade is just as wonderful. And yes, for those who are curious, this balm gets compliments from smoochers. At this point I’m thinking about investing in every single color of these lip balms.
Organic lip balm
Do you know that most people find hair ties and hairpins in every bag and room of their house? Well I have this problem except it’s related to this lipstick. It costs less than $4, which is one of the reasons I justify buying more of it than I need, but I also never want to go without it. There’s something about its simplicity that keeps me coming back – it contains no synthetic ingredients, has a natural scent of peppermint oil, and it’s the most hydrating lip product I’ve ever tried. Plus, it’s not just for lips; You can use it for dry hands, cuticles, and more, which is a blessing during the colder months.
I’m addicted to having some product on my lips at all times – I’d rather have lip balm than my phone. So I need something that is extremely moisturizing, long lasting and doesn’t dry out the lips. My favorite product I’ve ever tried is this overnight plumping lip mask from Lawless. It’s seriously the most hydrating product I’ve ever tried and it literally stays put until you take it off (like if I woke up in the morning and was still wearing it). It doesn’t feel sticky at all and has a plumping effect without causing pain or tingling. I use it at night and basically all day, but I also love it over a lip color when going out (it adds a really nice shine).
It’s not glamorous by any means, but Vaseline is my holy skincare product that gets me through the colder months. As someone with dry, sensitive skin, I have to be careful with certain ingredients and fragrances. So the biggest plus point for me is that it is fragrance-free, non-irritating and hypoallergenic. Since petroleum jelly helps retain moisture, I apply it to my favorite natural honey lip balm (which I unfortunately buy locally) before bed and it helps lock in all the great moisturizing ingredients until morning.
When I’m not wearing the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm, I’m wearing the Laneige Sleeping Mask. I bought my first Laneige lip mask in a stocking years ago and haven’t looked back since. At one point, I had several of these lying around in my bag, on my bathroom counter, and on my nightstand so I could make sure I was never without the super-intense hydration it provides. This is the lip product that got me through the driest winter in Colorado. If you are looking for something durable that still has a slight sheen and color to it, this is the perfect product for you.
I have it mir made it a personal goal to try every mint-scented lip balm out there. So far, this lip balm is my #1 contender. It has the texture and hydration of Aquaphor, but also contains SPF, which is always important for me as a Californian who spends a lot of time in the sun. Basically, this lip balm ticks all my boxes and I literally can’t go anywhere without having it in my bag.
I have super sensitive lips – the hugely popular Hourglass and Summer Fridays lip balms burn and blister my lips. Finding lip products that work for me took a lot of (very painful) trial and error. A product that has never misled me? Fresh’s hydrating sugar lip balm treatment. I always have a tube of clear varnish with me and love the shade Honey (a warm terracotta) when I want a bit of color.
Phytoplex lip balm
My love for this lip balm runs deep – if you look around my apartment, it could be a game of i-Spy as many as you can spot. I came across this in another lipstick review a few years ago and have absolutely sworn by it ever since. I have very, very dry skin, which means my lips are also very dry, and that’s the only thing that helps them in the Chicago winter. While most lipsticks make you feel like you have to reapply every hour, this lipstick is so good that I actually reapply less lipstick. The best part? A pack of 3 costs $10.
