If there’s one thing I know, it’s that I want to live in a Nancy Meyers world. The immaculate kitchens, the beachfront homes, the cooking and baking Mondays – sign me up. The scenery is picturesque, every house is immaculate and every bite of food looks delicious. (I can’t be the only one dreaming about the chocolate croissants in It’s Complicated).
Of course there is also the typical Nancy Meyers fashion. Linen pants, striped button-downs, straw accessories – no one loves coastal granny like she does. To immerse myself in the universe of Nancy Meyers this summer, I’m copying these eight classic-chic outfits from her best films until the first days of fall.
Erica Berry, Something's Gotta Give
First up is the design by Nancy Meyers: Erica Barry from Something’s Gotta Give. Her style in this film is the perfect example of the coastal granny aesthetic. Most of the time, Erica wears solid white or cream outfits, usually focusing on linen pants, light sweaters, and occasionally a bucket hat. This look is effortlessly chic, yet simple and doable, and just begs to be worn on a cool summer night.
Meredith Blake, The Parent Trap
Meredith Blake was the enemy growing up with The Parent Trap. How dare she get in the way of Hallie and Annie’s plan to get Elizabeth James and Nick Parker back together? Despite her evilness (I mean, she promised to send the twins to boarding school as soon as she said “yes”), Meredith Blake was able to dress. She was constantly seen in black and white outfits, always complemented by a red accent, like her lipstick and nails shown above. Her first look that we see in the film, when Annie-as-Hallie first meets her, is one of my favorite performances. The classic white dress, black sun hat and gold jewelry are timeless and elegant without appearing boring or stuffy.
Jane Adler, it's complicated
Another typical Nancy Meyers outfit, worn here by Jane Adler (aka Queen Meryl Streep). In this scene, Jane tends to her beautiful garden where she grows fresh vegetables and flowers, then heads to her stunning kitchen to cook a French-inspired meal for her J.Crew catalog family. My dream comes true.
When Jane spends time in her garden, she wears a casual and classic outfit consisting of a breezy button-down dress, baggy dark wash jeans and a woven hat. It’s perfect for wearing on summer weekends – or if you’re lucky, for garden maintenance.
Chessy, the parent trap
Chessy was an unsung hero in The Parent Trap. She could sense Meredith Blake’s bad intentions from a mile away and always had Annie and Hallie’s back. Chessy’s style was casual and relaxed throughout, but she had the basics down pat. Her relaxed denim button-down shirt paired with a simple tank top and comfy pants makes for an easy look for running errands or a lazy Saturday morning.
